Not Every Learner Fits the Exam-Only Mold

BTEC is for the student who learns best by doing. Instead of sitting in an exam hall remembering facts, BTEC students build portfolios of practical work, complete projects, write reports and give presentations. It is how the real world actually works.

BTEC qualifications are awarded by Pearson Edexcel and recognised by universities in the UK, US, Australia and Kenya. A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-Levels and meets the entry requirements for most degree programmes.

We find BTEC works particularly well for students who are clear about their career direction, enjoy project-based learning, or who find traditional exam-heavy systems stressful without being any less capable.

How BTEC Assessment Works

  • 01 No final exam sweepstakes — Assessment is spread across the course through assignments, projects, presentations and practical tasks.
  • 02 Clear grading criteria — Students know exactly what they need to do to achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction before starting each unit.
  • 03 Resubmission opportunities — If a piece of work does not meet the criteria, students get feedback and can improve it. One chance is rarely the end of the road.
  • 04 Portfolio building — By the end of the course, students have a comprehensive body of work that demonstrates their skills to employers and universities.
  • 05 Some external assessment — Selected units include controlled assessments set by Pearson, ensuring rigour and standardisation across centres.

BTEC Level Equivalents

Can I combine BTEC with IGCSE or A-Levels? Absolutely. Many of our students take a BTEC alongside one or two IGCSE or A-Level subjects. This gives them both practical skills and academic breadth. It is a powerful combination that universities increasingly value.
