What Is IGCSE and Why Does It Matter?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world's most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. It is recognised by universities and employers in over 160 countries, including Kenya, the UK, US, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

At Impact, we offer IGCSE through both Cambridge (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel. Both are equally respected, but some students find one board's approach suits them better. We help you choose the right one during your initial consultation.

For students moving on to A-Levels or the IB Diploma, IGCSE provides the perfect foundation. It develops strong subject knowledge, analytical skills and exam technique that will serve them well at the next level.

Subjects We Offer

Choose from over 20 IGCSE and A-Level subjects. Most students take 7 to 9 subjects at IGCSE level and 3 to 4 at A-Level.

A-Level Programme

For students who have completed IGCSE (or O-Levels), our A-Level programme opens doors to top universities worldwide. We offer both Cambridge International A-Levels and Pearson Edexcel A-Levels.

Subject Depth

A-Levels go far deeper than IGCSE. Students typically choose 3 or 4 subjects they are passionate about, building specialist knowledge that universities value.

University Preparation

We integrate university application support into the A-Level programme. Personal statement workshops, interview preparation and course research are all part of the deal.

Flexible Timing

Start A-Levels in September or January. Take AS-Levels first, then A2. We accommodate different academic calendars and retake students.

Cambridge vs Edexcel — Which Board Is Right for You?

Both qualifications are globally recognised and accepted by universities worldwide. The differences come down to assessment style, subject availability and personal learning preference.

Feature Cambridge (CAIE) Pearson Edexcel
Assessment style Predominantly end-of-year written exams; emphasis on deep analytical thinking and extended writing. Modular options available in some subjects; mark schemes tend to be more structured, which many students find easier to follow.
Subject range Very broad — 70+ IGCSE subjects globally. Cambridge is the larger board and often offers more niche subject choices. Strong subject range, especially for sciences, maths and business. Slightly fewer subjects than Cambridge but covers all core areas.
Learning style fit Well suited to students who enjoy open-ended questions, discussion-based answers and independent thinking. Well suited to students who prefer clear, structured mark schemes and a more predictable exam format.
University recognition Universally recognised. Often the preferred choice for UK, US and Commonwealth university applications. Fully recognised worldwide. Strong reputation particularly in the UK, South Africa and across Africa.
Exam sessions May/June and Oct/Nov series (some subjects also Jan in Kenya). Jan, May/June and Oct/Nov series — slightly more flexibility for resits.
Our recommendation A great fit for students aiming for competitive universities or those who enjoy the challenge of more essay-style responses. A great fit for students who want clarity in what is being asked and a consistent, structured approach to exams.

IGCSE FAQs

What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE?
Both are equally recognised by universities. Cambridge tends to have more traditional exam structures with open-ended questions, while Edexcel often includes more structured mark schemes that many students find easier to follow. The subject content is very similar for most subjects. We can help you decide which board suits your child best during the consultation.
How many subjects should my child take?
Most students take 7 to 9 subjects at IGCSE level. The exact number depends on your child's ability, university requirements and time available. We recommend a minimum of 5 core subjects including English, Maths and at least one science.
Can my child start IGCSE mid-year?
Yes, depending on the subject and how far through the syllabus we are. Some subjects like Maths and Sciences are easier to join mid-stream than others. We do an assessment and give you an honest recommendation.
Do you offer IGCSE for adults or retake students?
Absolutely. We have adult learners and students retaking specific subjects to improve their grades. The teaching approach is the same, just tailored to your specific needs and timeline.
Do you handle the exam registration for us?
Yes. We manage the entire exam registration process with our partner exam centres — selecting the right syllabus codes, meeting entry deadlines and keeping you informed throughout. You focus on studying; we handle the paperwork.
